The poem, Funeral Blues, by WH Auden, was used to such great
effect in the film "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and is one that is
most poignant.
It starts with the words "Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone"
and finishes on a decidedly sad and thought provoking note:-
"Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good."
The Soldier by Rupert Brooke
If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust conceal'd;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air.
Wash'd by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
and for you, a prayer and poem, entitled Reaching Out by
Christine Rigden
I feel your pain
and long to touch the hurt
and make it melt away.
You can find the full text here.
I especially love the words that speak of a "hand to hold in the
darkness".
